Slumptown, Series of Drawings & Paintings, 2017-22

Artist Statement:

Slumptown is a series of drawings and paintings that I created between the years 2017 and 2022. It encapsulates a highly graphic, colourful design process I had during this time and the works produced are all of the same style. Each drawing or painting is usually of a named imagined character of my own creation; for instance, the large oil painting RICKY is one such example.

Each character embodies feelings and emotions, being a sort of avatar for my own sentiments – acting as a conduit for my expression, in place of my own. I designed each character with humour and whimsy in mind, in ways that I could never express in the real world myself.

Slumptown is an imagined dimension / place under the sea, in which its characters all operate on their own laws and feelings. It’s where I got my Instagram handle from: @slumptownkid
